What is the TAPS Endowment Fund?

The Tax Assistance Public Service (TAPS) endowment fund was created in 2014 to provide stable, long-term funding for tax-related public service programs for underserved taxpayers. TAPS is funded by individual donations and provides financial support primarily for the Christine A. Brunswick Public Service Fellowship.

Christine A. Brunswick Public Service Fellowship

This program provides two-year fellowships for recent law school graduates to work with non-profit organizations providing tax-related legal assistance to underserved communities.

Tax Section Pro Bono Programs

Through free trainings, resources to assist and connect Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic attorneys, access to pro bono opportunities, comments on government regulations, and much more, the Tax Section seeks to increase the profile of pro bono work, expand access to tax assistance and create a more equitable and just tax system. The TAPS Endowment fund was created to expand and support this work, your donation can make that possible in the future.

Tax Section is pleased to offer free educational programs relating to the representation of low-income taxpayers. We offer both CLE and non-CLE sessions regularly on a wide range of topics presented by the top experts in the field at our Tax Section Meetings and virtually between meetings. The recordings of these sessions are available to the public for free.

The Tax Section runs a very active listserv where over 1,200 pro bono and LITC attorneys communicate about questions, resources, publications, training and job opportunities and more. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

The Tax Section works closely with the IRS and national and local partners to encourage members to participate in the IRS’ free tax assistance program, VITA. Volunteers help prepare basic income tax returns for low-income taxpayers.

Calendar Calls and Settlement Days

The Tax Section played a crucial role in establishing national coverage at U.S. Tax Court calendar calls and are available to consult with unrepresented taxpayers to advise them on court procedure, assist with settlement discussions, and in some cases, to take on their representation before the court both at Calendar Call and in advance through Settlement Days.
